June is National Safety Month, and as you prepare for the month ahead, I’m excited to share a handful of tips and resources for you! The idea of keeping students and your school community safe is essential throughout the school year. During the month of June, you might decide to try out a few different activities. These activities can highlight school safety initiatives, or explore the idea of staying safe.
In this blog post, I have five tips to make the most of National Safety Month. You’ll find student-friendly activities and free posters to display in your school. Let’s jump in!
5 National Safety Month Activities
You can tailor the activities below to any age group. And of course, you can set intentions related to the goals of your school community. If you want to skip ahead and download the free posters, use this link to grab them.
Review Safety Guidelines
One of the first ways you may want to make the most of National Safety Month is to review the safety guidelines in your school community. This task doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating and might focus on just one area of your students’ day. For example, you might focus on safety in the lunchroom or staying safe in digital spaces.
Share Student Tips
To get students involved in National Safety Month, have them share their own tips for staying safe. This student tip could include a high-interest topic for them like safety at the beach, bicycle safety, or how to be a good digital citizen and stay safe online. Students can share their safety tips with their classmates or in more social spaces like a school or district social media account.
Write Safety Stories
For a narrative spin, ask students to write their own “safety stories” where they share a time where they made a decision to stay safe. This story could be about walking home with a friend instead of by themselves or changing the batteries in a smoke detector with a family member. You might have students record these as audio stories or write in a digital format.
Display Posters
Another way to make the most of National Safety Month is to share best practices and tips with your school community. Use Digital Signs
