The past two school years have been unlike any other in the past. For many students, teachers, and families, there have been shifts between in-person and online instruction that have made building classroom community and relationships especially challenging. So as you head back to school this year, you probably have social-emotional learning on the mind. There are many different ways to support social-emotional learning (SEL) over the course of the school year.
The idea of social-emotional learning is one I’ve covered a few times on the blog this year. And you might remember this Easy EdTech Podcast interview with SEL expert Krista Leh from this past spring. We spoke about strategies for supporting social-emotional learning in the digital world and ideas for supporting SEL initiatives at your school and district.
In this blog post, we’ll look at three tips for supporting students with social-emotional learning. I’ve also included a link to download a set of free SEL posters from Rise Vision.
Tips to Support Social-Emotional Learning
This back-to-school season, you can start the school year with these three quick tips to support social-emotional learning:
- Give Students Time to Share: Whether as a whole class, small group, or a partner turn-and-talk, students can share an update on their work or even talk about a favorite thing. You might try discussion prompts specifically connected to community-building.
- Conduct Regular Check-Ins: This routine might happen at the beginning or end of the school day, where students have a chance to talk about how they are feeling. You might try out word clouds with students as a way to help them share.
- Give Students Options: To help promote student decision-making, give them choices throughout the school day. This could include choosing which step to complete next on a project or whether to work independently or with a partner.

Using Digital Signage to Share SEL Tips

Rise Vision creates a wide range of resources for schools and educators. The team at Rise Vision creates digital signage for displays throughout a school building. Have you used digital signage before? Digital signage helps schools create important messaging (around SEL and more) and emergency alerts, too.
