You can take students to the nation’s capital using these free resources.
Regular readers of the blog know that I’m a big fan of virtual field trips. The very first episode of my podcast was even titled “Virtual Reality Classroom Discussion Prompts.” So when I heard about this new event, I couldn’t wait to share more details. In today’s blog post, I’ll share the special event taking place later this month — and you and your students are invited!
City of U.S. Virtual Field Trip
This memorable virtual field trip for students will premiere on May 26th at 1 PM ET. It’s called The City of U.S. – A Virtual Field Trip to Washington, D.C., and you can use this link to register your class for this unique virtual event. With this event, you can take a quick trip to Washington D.C. to learn more about the nation’s capital to visit six notable landmarks.
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Discovery Education want to ensure all students can experience Washington, D.C. this year. They’ve invited all learners to attend a unique, totally free virtual field trip to the nation’s capital. This event is designed to help all participants experience the history and beauty of the federal city.
Virtual Field Trip for Students
What does this virtual field trip include? The City of U.S. kicks off with a greeting from America’s First Educator and First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden. After the welcome message from the first lady, students will take a behind-the-scenes tour of the White House. When the White House tour finishes, students will go off on a virtual tour of Washington, D.C. landmarks.
This virtual tour will feature special guests and take students through six notable spots in the nation’s capital, including:
- The White House
- The U.S. Capitol Building
- The Supreme Court
- The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
- Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
- The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
A field trip wouldn’t be complete without a chance for questions. Students from families served by Operation Homefront will ask questions to experts at each spot. If you haven’t heard of Operation Homefront before, it is a national nonprofit with the mission of building strong, stable, and secure military families.
The City of U.S. event is also accompanied by learning resources and family activities. These were all created by Discovery Education’s expert Curriculum Team. You can find all of these resources on the event homepage.
Join a Virtual Field Trip
If you can’t join in live on May 26th, you can still access these unique resources. This virtual field trip was designed so teachers can either watch the entire program with their class as a live event or use specific lesson segments afterward. If you’d like to share the event with families in your school community, that’s an option, too!
This event will air on Discovery Family and Discovery Familia (in Spanish) on Friday, May 28th at 12 PM ET. You can also catch The City of U.S on C-SPAN during Memorial Day Weekend, on Saturday, May 29th at 10 AM ET.
