From consumers to creators, students of all ages interact with media both inside and outside of the classroom. What does responsible, healthy media use look like? And how do we provide students with opportunities to reflect on the way they use media before, during and after school hours?
In just a few weeks I’m leading a webinar all about leading conversations about media use with students. I’m excited to partner with Media Power Youth for this event. If you haven’t heard of them before, their mission is “to provide a continuum of media literacy education from early childhood through young adulthood, contributing to healthy, safe use of media and prevention of at-risk behaviors.”

On Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 4 PM EDT, I’m hosting a webinar titled, “How to Lead Conversations About Healthy, Responsible Media Use.” Here is the official description:
Media, from video games and commercials to movies and social media, has an enormous influence on students’ behavior, thoughts, health, and well-being. Educators see its impact every day in the classroom. How do we teach our students to become knowledgeable, responsible consumers and creators of media in today’s digital world?

Dr. Burns will be joined by Dr. Kim Lyng, Education Manager for Media Power Youth, who will share insight into how media impacts our societal and cultural norms and the effect this can have on young people’s behaviors and health in areas such as violence, substance misuse, and nutrition. She will also provide evidence-based ways to empower students to make both healthier and smarter decisions about media.
